One year ago today, the Kibbutz of Kfar Aza was targeted by the Hamas attack. More than 60 residents of this small community were killed and 17 taken hostage.

Shahar Shnorman and his wife survived the massacre. They decided to return to live on the kibbutz despite the trauma.

They blame the Israeli authorities for failing to protect them.

“We didn’t do what we had to do, says Shahar. Neither our government, nor our army. And we lost. And we continue to lose, every day. Every day we fight in Gaza, they say: oh, we killed another terrorist, blew up another house, it doesn’t matter.”

Other kibbutz were attacked on October 7, such as Nir Oz. 117 of its 400 residents have disappeared, killed or taken hostage.

Shahar takes us through the deserted streets. “You can see it’s a burned house. In the farthest house a couple was murdered and in this one a family of five remained alive. It’s just a question Russian roulette at the endhe said.

In these kibbutz-like ghost towns, the scars of Hamas massacres are still very present.
