Firefighters continue to battle with scattered outbreaks in the large fire near Corinth, which is completing the third 24-hour period since it broke out.

Tens of thousands of hectares were swallowed up by the fire, but above all, this fire left two families in mourning and left five young children orphaned and another who will be born in a few weeks.

According to information provided by firefighters, these outbreaks are mainly in inaccessible places, but the wind intensity is very low which could improve the situation.

Land and air forces have been reinforced. 490 firefighters with 16 forestry teams and 159 vehicles, volunteers, volunteer groups of civil protection and nautical and project equipment from the Peloponnese region and the General Staff of National Defense, but also forces the forestry service and the Greek police are mobilized.

The RescEU mechanism has been activated

On the aerial level, 31 air assets contributed during the day, namely 17 helicopters (including 3 for coordination) and 14 planes (including 2 Italian).

It should be noted that the General Secretariat of Civil Protection activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) with a request for air assistance for the forest fires in Corinth. The assistance includes three CL-415 firefighting planes, including two from Italy and one from Croatia.

One of the toughest fires of the year

According to the Greek authorities, this is the most complicated situation of the season on the fire front. The fire extends for more than 30 kilometers, although it is not continuous.

An evacuation order was issued Tuesday morning in the village of Sofiana. The fire passed a few hundred meters from the first houses, and the older residents remember that this is not the first time they have been faced with a similar situation.

The presence of the volunteers was much appreciated, as they rushed to help not only on the front line, but also at the rear, providing the necessary materials to those battling the flames.
