UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the destruction and death in the Gaza Strip due to the Israeli aggression is the worst he has seen during his current term in office, which he assumed in 2017.

He added in an interview with the Associated Press that the United Nations offered to monitor any possible ceasefire between the parties in Gaza, recalling the presence of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in the Middle East.

He also pointed out that Israel’s acceptance of this offer is a weak possibility, indicating that the involvement of the United Nations in any role in the future of Gaza is “unrealistic”, and stressed the necessity and importance of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Guterres also stressed that the two-state solution is the only way to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and that there is no other alternative to it.

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 135,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Israel continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
