Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged on Monday that his country would take all legal steps to hold Israel accountable for the killing of activist Ayse Nur Azgi Egi, while Washington said it expected Israel to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the killing of the Turkish-American activist.
Erdogan stressed, in a speech he delivered after a government meeting at the presidential complex in the capital Ankara, that his country will continue to pursue Israel at the highest levels and through the International Court of Justice as well.
The Turkish President stressed that “it has become urgent to hold a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation at the leaders’ level and to show a firm position to the Islamic world” regarding developments in the Palestinian arena.
Erdogan added that “the duty of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is to defend the issue of Jerusalem and it is unreasonable for it to remain indifferent to these attacks,” stressing the Turkish people’s support for their Palestinian brothers, “as a people who wrote an epic of resistance during the War of Independence against the imperialist powers at that time,” according to his expression.
Washington: We will not preempt investigations
For its part, the US State Department said it does not have Any additional information about the circumstances of the killing of activist Aisha Nour, and that she has asked Israel to investigate and expects it to be comprehensive and transparent, stressing that the killing of the American activist “is disturbing and worrying to us, but we do not want to preempt the course of the investigations.”
This comes after the people of Nablus in the West Bank buried the body of the American-Turkish activist Aisha Nur Azgi Egi, who was killed by Israeli occupation forces last Friday.
The funeral prayer was held after the body was taken out of Rafidia Governmental Hospital on Monday afternoon. The Palestinian security forces organized an official funeral procession for the solidarity activist, in the presence of Nablus Governor Ghassan Daghlas and representatives of civil society. The body of the deceased is expected to be transferred to Turkey after that, according to what was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara.
The Palestinian forensic medicine confirmed the day before yesterday that the activist was killed by an Israeli sniper’s bullet to the head during a peaceful protest, while her family called on US President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to “conduct an independent investigation into the unlawful killing of an American citizen and ensure full accountability for the parties involved” after the Israeli army said it was investigating the matter.
