Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for vice president Wednesday, closing out the third day of the party’s national convention in Chicago.

In his speech, he notably evoked his childhood in a small town in Nebraska, to establish a contrast with his Republican opponent, JD Vance.

“I grew up in Butte, Nebraska, a town of 400 people.”he said, mocking Mr. Vance, who is from an Ohio town and claims to have roots in Appalachia. “I had 24 kids in my high school class, and none of them went to Yale.”

Before Kamala Harris chose him as her running mate, many Americans had never heard of Tim Walz. The choice is seen as a strategic move aimed at winning over the working-class Midwestern electorate, whose support is crucial in the upcoming elections.

Tim Walz has returned to the harsh rhetoric that made him popular in the early weeks of his campaign.

“This is a program that no one asked for”he said of the famous “2025 Project,” which presents a detailed plan for a second term for Mr. Trump. “It’s a program that serves no one except the wealthiest and most extreme among us. It’s a program that does nothing for our neighbors in need. Is that weird? Absolutely. But it’s also wrong. And it’s dangerous.”

Frank and energetic, he alluded to his experience as a teacher and basketball and football coach.

“It’s the fourth quarter, we’re down by one goal, but we’re on the attack, we have the ball and we’re moving up the field. And we have the right team.”

National Guard veteran and avid hunter Tim Walz also addressed the issue of gun control.

“I believe in the Second Amendment, but I also believe our first responsibility is to keep our children safe.”he said.

The third evening of the convention focused on the theme of “fight for our freedoms”with a particular emphasis on protecting the right to abortion.

“In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and the personal choices they make. While we wouldn’t make those same choices for ourselves, we have one golden rule: Mind your own business.”he said.

According to him, while Democrats want to defend freedoms, Republicans want to eliminate them.

“If these men get back in the White House, they will start raising costs for the middle class. They will repeal the Affordable Care Act. They will gut Social Security and Medicare, and they will ban abortion nationwide, with or without Congress.”he added.
