The repression of protests against the official election results in Venezuela has left at least one person dead, according to an NGO. Police used tear gas in Caracas to disperse crowds that threw stones and formed barricades.
Elsewhere in the country, spontaneous protests also broke out.
The protests come after one of the most peaceful elections in recent memory, reflecting the hopes of a population yearning for change after 25 years of one-party rule.
Evidence of fraud according to the opposition
Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez said Monday that his campaign had the evidence it needed to prove it won the country’s disputed election, which electoral authorities handed to the president Nicolas Maduro.
Several foreign governments, including the United States and the European Union, have refrained from recognizing the election results.
