A heat wave hits Romania since last Wednesday. In Bucharest, temperatures reached 40°C in the shade this week.
But inside restaurant kitchens, the heat generated by ovens and grills can raise the mercury as high as 50 degrees.
To protect their workers, Romanian employers set up relay systems, and allow them to take longer breaks.
“It’s probably 50°C near the grill”says Justian Manea, chef in the Romanian capital. “But we are fine, we take turns. We will get through this heat wave”.
Meteorologists announced that the heatwave alert will be maintained in Romania for two more days, at least.

“Fortunately, we have few non-air-conditioned ambulances and we do not use them during the heatwave”explains Cristian Grasu, paramedic.
Copernicus, the European Union’s climate monitoring agency, reported that the month of May was the hottest on record globally. This is the twelfth consecutive month of record heat, according to agency data.
