Iran: Crowds gather in Tehran for the funeral of “martyr” Ebrahim Raïssi

Iranian President Ebrahim Raïssi, who died on Sunday in a helicopter accident in the northwest of the country, will be buried this Thursday.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leads prayers at Iranian President’s farewell ceremonyto the Minister of Foreign Affairs and to the 7 other people killed in a helicopter accident on May 19.

The coffins were covered with Iranian flags and photos of the deceased.

The black turban placed on the coffin of President Ebrahim Raïssi symbolizes his direct descent from the Prophet Mohammed.

Tens of thousands of people gathered around the University of Tehran to attend the ceremony.

Senior officials from the Revolutionary Guards as well as the political leader of Hamas, representatives of Hezbollah, Russia, Turkey and Iraq were also present.

The coffins were then loaded onto a semi-trailer and transported among the crowds in the Iranian capital.

The late president will be buried Thursday in his hometown of Mashhad, in the northeast of the country.
