The death of the Iranian president opens up for the country a period of political uncertainty.

First sign of excitement: the Tehran stock market was closed this Monday following the announcement of the death of Ebrahim Raïssi in a helicopter accident.

The head of Iranian diplomacy Amir Abdollahian was on board the plane and was among the victims.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Iranians “not to worry” and assured that there would be “no disruption in the administration of the country”.

According to the constitution, Ebrahim Raïssi will be replaced by First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber and a presidential election must be organized within 50 days.

The Supreme Leader is expected to give his approval to the appointment of Mohammad Mokhber as interim president.

Mohammad Mokhber was appointed by Ebraïm Raïssi in August 2021.

He was then head of Setad, a parapublic foundation sanctioned by the United States.

Setad is a conglomerate with stakes in a wide range of sectors of the Iranian economy, including healthcare.

The president of the Setad is appointed by the Iranian Supreme Leader.
