From the destruction of cultural centers such as Gaza’s century-old archives building to the targeted killing of artists such as famed poet Refaat Alareer, Israel is erasing facets of Palestinian culture in its ongoing war against the besieged territory. Under international law, the deliberate targeting of cultural heritage is considered a war crime under the 1954 UNESCO Convention, which prohibits the destruction of cultural sites during war or conflict. But what exactly are at stake when a centuries-old culture is erased and what are Palestinian artists doing to preserve what remains?
