The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, visited Sochi on Wednesday to discuss the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Discussions focused on the measures to be taken to guarantee the safety of the plant when it is shut down but also in the event of a possible restart.

“I would say that beyond these technical aspects, it is important that the leaders of the two belligerents listen to the director general of the IAEA. For the moment, this is the case”Rafael Grossi told the state-controlled Russia Today television channel.

At a previous news conference, Mr. Grossi told reporters in Sochi on Wednesday that he had had a “very intensive and exhaustive work session” with Russian officials, notably from the Russian national nuclear energy agency Rosatom.

Since the capture of the Zaporizhia power plant by Russian forces, at the start of the invasion of Ukraine, the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly expressed its concern.

Although its six reactors are currently shut down, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant still needs electricity and qualified personnel to operate the cooling systems.

Rafael Grossi, who visited the site last month, is trying to maintain dialogue with the Russians and Ukrainians.
