The European Commission has announced the opening of an investigation into the Chinese social network TikTok. Brussels wants to check whether the social network ensures the protection of minors.
Brussels indicated that it had opened “ a formal procedure » to determine whether TikTok, owned by the Chinese group Byte Dance, violated the digital services regulation.
The European policeman is investigating alleged failings concerning the protection of minors.
The European Commission said measures including age verification tools to prevent minors from finding “inappropriate content“might not be”reasonable, proportionate and effective“.
The Commission is also investigating measures to protect the privacy of minors, the transparency of advertisements and researchers’ access to data.
Every month in Europe, some 134 million people use the social network Tik Tok.
