The 37th African Union summit opened Wednesday in Addis Ababa. Around thirty presidents and heads of government are present in the Ethiopian capital. On the agenda for discussions: a continent increasingly shaken by coups, unconstitutional changes and conflicts. With the migration crisis and climate change, health issues will also be at the heart of concerns.
On this subject, we have collected the opinion of the former president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso.
“We are of course aware of certain financial problems across the world, particularly in Africa, but we believe that we must continue to give priority to the so-called social sector, health and education. The African Union has defined “There is a very clear path and strategy for this and I think it is widely shared by African leaders. They need to prioritize these sectors.” explains José Manuel Barroso.
A few weeks ago, a historic campaign against malaria was launched in Cameroon. The country is now the first in the world to apply systematic vaccination of children, outside of clinical trials, against the disease transmitted by mosquitoes.
“We have seen that there is still a lot of injustice in terms of the distribution of resources for vaccination around the world. In ten years, manufacturing capacities will be greater than before” adds the former president of the European Commission.
Malaria kills more than 600,000 people each year across the world, and 95% of these cases are in Africa. The victims are mostly children under the age of 5.
