The institutional crisis that Poland has been going through since the legislative elections last October continues to deepen.
The nationalist Law and Justice party (PiS), in power until 2023, denounces the practices of new government, led by pro-European Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The centrist coalition government in power recently insists it wants to restore the rule of law and depoliticize justice, which it says would have served the interests of PiS when the party ruled the country.
“Pure anarchy, tyranny and totalitarianism begin to take hold in Europe“, denounced Arkadiusz Mularczyk, member of Law and Justice.
The President of the Polish Assembly Szymon Hołownia replied: “the Constitution has just come into force“.
Presidential pardon for two PiS members
Polish President Andrzej Duda, an ally of PiS, has just granted a presidential pardon for the second time to two members of the party, Mariusz Kaminski and Maciej Wasik. The latter were convicted of abuse of power for acts dating back to 2007, when they worked in the country’s anti-corruption office.
Their arrest finally took place a few weeks ago, after the two men found refuge in the presidential palace.
The event had crystallized the deep disagreements between the old government and the new one. From, PiS accuses the government coalition of creating the conditions for a coup d’état.
The government of Donald Tusk defends itself: it would only use the legislative mechanisms put in place by the PiS to reestablish the rule of law.
