Greek Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis has repeatedly stated that he wants to legalize same-sex marriage. From February, the law proposed by his government will be examined by the Greek Parliament.

During the 2023 election campaign, Kyriákos Mitsotákis, of the conservative New Democracy party, said he wanted to put an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Different reproductive rights for same-sex couples

Adoption should be open to same-sex couples thanks to the law legalizing marriage for all in Greece.

However, Medically assisted procreation (MAP) or the use of surrogate mothers via surrogacy (GPA) will not be authorized for lesbian and gay couples. However, they are for heterosexual couples, just like the PMA for single women.

If I were alone and couldn’t have children, then I would adopt. However, since my partner and I have the possibility of having our own child, why shouldn’t we? Why is there this discrimination?“, asks Penny Moisiadou to Euronews.

The latter, in a relationship with a woman for many years, would like to get married as soon as the law allows it, and to resort to assisted reproduction for two to become mothers.

In the future, these two lesbian women could embark on an assisted reproduction journey separately if they wanted, but not as a married couple.

Konstantinos Pantos, Secretary General of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, would like the law to allow everything while respecting the rules, “instead of pushing couples to find loopholes in the law.”
