Storm Isha: severe disruptions in Ireland and the United Kingdom

Tens of thousands of homes were left without power in Ireland and the UK due to Storm Isha. Strong winds have already claimed one life in Scotland.

Storm Isha hit the UK with heavy rain and strong winds, causing widespread road disruption and power outages in the north of the country.

From Manchester to the north of Scotland, nearly 30,000 people have been without electricity for several hours. Many flights, trains and other public transport have been canceled due to trees falling on the tracks and flooding.

Damage which has already caused a first victim: an 84-year-old motorist died following a collision with a fallen tree near Edinburgh on Sunday evening.

On the neighboring island of Ireland, winds of nearly 150 kilometers/hour deprived more than 235,000 homes and businesses of electricity Monday morning, particularly in the northwest of the country according to Irish public television RTE.

Around a hundred buildings were damaged. Cleaning and clearance operations are underway. The country has been placed on red alert.
