Groenland’s grade or force attachment to the United States, as Donald Trump wishes, does not pass to the Greenlanders. A recent survey shows that an overwhelming majority-85 %-Greenlanders does not want the island to be part of the United States.

Before and since his inauguration, the American president has reiterated his calls to take control of the largest island in the world, rich in natural resources and housing an American space installation.

On Saturday, he said: “I think we will get there” and insisted that the 57,000 inhabitants of the island “want to be with us”.

This is therefore not what local residents seem to think: according to the survey carried out by the Verian research company for the Sermitsiaq newspaper in Greenland and the Danish media Berlingske, only 6 % of Greenlanders wish to join the United States, 9 % are undecided.

This survey comes when Danish Prime Minister puts Frederiksen, whose Greenland control country, met on Tuesday various NATO allies to try to consolidate a united European front in the face of Trump’s increasingly expansionist rhetoric. Put Frederiksen has already explained to the American president that The island was not for sale causing the anger of the head of the White House.

Although it is partly controlled by Denmark, Greenland is not part of the block of 27 members of the European Union but benefits from special status with access to European funds and freedom of movement for the Greenlanders, who are considered as citizens of the EU. In addition, Greenland is covered by the mutual defense clause provided for by the EU treaties – which means that all European member states would be forced to provide “aid and assistance” if another Member State was “victim of An armed assault on its territory “.

The European Union has, for its part, its support in Denmark in the name of border intangibility EU member states.

If the Prime Minister of the Greenlandic autonomous territory, Múte Egede, also opposed the Donald Trump project, stressing that the Greenlanders above all wanted to regain their independencehe has not completely rejected the offer of collaboration with Washington in particular in order to develop his territory.

To justify the attachment of Greenland to the United States, Donald Trump has mentioned several times A question of “national security” Faced with the Russian and Chinese threat in the Arctic.
