At least 50 people were killed in the incident of the collapse of a traditional mine of gold mining in the “Hayid” area, which is located between the cities of Atbara and Haya in Sudan, according to local sources reported to Al -Jazeera.
According to the sources, the stricken mine is located in a remote desert area north of Haya and South Al -Kalis, and it is administratively followed by the state of the Nile River (Atbara).
The tragic incident to the forefront returned the repeated warnings of the absence of official oversight and the weak safety measures in civil mining sites, which is a major source of income for thousands of Sudanese in light of the worsening economic crisis.
It is noteworthy that the “Howid” area witnessed a similar collapse last April, which led to material injuries and losses.
The families of the victims and human rights activists called for an urgent and independent investigation on the reasons for the collapse, the regulation of the work environment in traditional mining, and the imposition of control over exploration activities, in addition to providing protection and rescue means in these remote areas.
Traditional mining spreads from gold in most of the states of Sudan, and is often done without direct government supervision, which makes it one of the most dangerous sectors in terms of accidents and victims, amid a chronic formal failure in setting controls that regulate this activity.
