Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Spain called for a full membership of Palestine in the United Nations and recognition of its country on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and renewed its commitment to the two -state solution.
This came in a joint statement of the four European countries, published by the Spanish Foreign Ministry on its website after the “Madrid+” meeting a year after its official recognition of the State of Palestine.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry said that the meeting held in Madrid aims to renew and promote international commitment to the two -state solution, stressing that the Palestinian state, which is viable and geographically connected to the internationally recognized borders and includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only way to achieve peace and security and meet the legitimate national aspirations of the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, according to the statement.
The statement pointed out that the application of the two -state solution and recognition of the state of Palestine after many years of stagnation not only represents a correct moral position, but also constitute a basic step to revive the momentum towards the implementation of this solution.
He stated that recognition of the Palestinian state is an additional step on the path of implementing the two -state solution.
The four countries called on all members of the international community to take practical steps to implement the two -state solution, including individual recognition of the states of Palestine and Israel by countries that have not yet been submitted, supporting the granting of Palestine full membership in the United Nations, and strengthening a path that ultimately leads to a final agreement based on mutual recognition between the two parties.
Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Spain pointed out that the conference settlement of the Palestinian issue is peacefully and the implementation of the two -state solution to be held on June 17, under the auspices of the United Nations and a joint presidency of France and Saudi Arabia is not merely an occasion that has the highest levels of international legitimacy, but also represents the appropriate framework to move forward in implementing the two -state solution.
On May 22, 2024, Norway, Ireland and Spain announced its official recognition of the State of Palestine as of the 28th of the same month.
Before this development, 8 members of the European Union in the State of Palestine, namely Bulgaria, Poland, Chic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and the administration of southern Cyprus Romans and Sweden.
The “Madrid+Group” was established to support Palestine in the face of the continuous Israeli genocide, and includes in its membership a number of European, Arab and Islamic countries, including Spain, Norway, Slovenia, Ireland, Turkey, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Bahrain.
Palestine is a state as an observer at the United Nations, but was not a member, according to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on November 29, 2012.
