3 Israelis were killed in an attack at one of the crossing points between the occupied West Bank and Jordan. The attacker was “neutralized”.
Israeli emergency services announced the deaths of three people on Sunday in a shooting attack at one of the crossing points between the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank and Jordan.
Israeli police said in a statement that an assailant had been “neutralized”. He reportedly approached the Jordanian side in a truck before opening fire on Israeli security forces.
Local authorities have closed the crossing until further notice and Jordan has announced that it is opening an investigation into the shooting.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and linked it to the broader conflict between Israel, Iran and allied militant groups, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Jordan, which has a large Palestinian population, signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994 but has been publicly critical of the Jewish state’s policies toward the Palestinians.
For its part, Hezbollah declared early Sunday that it had “Bombarded with a salvo of rockets Kiryat Shmona”a city in northern Israel, “in response to the enemy’s attacks (…) and in particular to the attack” which cost the lives of rescuers on Saturday in the village of Froun. On Sunday morning, the Israeli army announced that it had carried out a series of airstrikes on “Hezbollah military buildings” and intercepted projectiles fired from Lebanon during the night.
